Here is exactly how the work visa works in 2026, and what it should cost you (the answer: nothing — the employer pays for the visa).

The Rule: The Employer Sponsors the Visa

In the UAE, the work visa is sponsored by your employer — by law, the employer bears the visa costs (typically AED 3,000–5,000 all-in). "Free visa" in Gulf job ads simply means this employer-sponsored route: you pay ₹0 for the visa itself. Your own costs are your passport, police certificate, medical and the agency's service charge, which should be agreed upfront. If an "agent" asks you to pay the visa fee, you are being overcharged or scammed.

Step 1: Job Offer and Entry Permit

Once you accept an offer, your employer obtains work-permit approval from MOHRE (the UAE labour ministry) or the relevant free-zone authority, and then an entry permit in your name, valid for 60 days. The employer sends it to you — that document is what you fly with.

Step 2: In-Country Formalities

- Medical fitness test — a blood test and chest X-ray at a UAE health centre.

- Emirates ID biometrics — fingerprints and photo at an ICP service centre.

- Labour contract — your employer registers the MOHRE contract; you verify the job title and salary digitally before it is finalised.

Step 3: Residence Visa (Now Electronic)

Since 2022 the UAE residence visa is issued electronically — linked to your Emirates ID rather than stamped in your passport. Your employer receives the e-visa, and you receive your Emirates ID card and labour card. Health insurance is mandatory and employer-provided in Dubai.

Your Salary Protection: WPS

UAE salaries must be paid through the Wages Protection System — via bank transfer, due on the 1st of each month (Ministerial Resolution 34 of 2026 tightened enforcement).
